Living With Diabetes

There are three main types of diabetes, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. In this article we will be talking about type 2 diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus type 2. This is the most common form of diabetes. There are several factors that can cause type 2 diabetes, weight, activity level, eating habits, family history, and pregnancy. "Type 2 diabetes happens when the body cannot use insulin correctly and sugar builds up in the blood."(Type 2 Diabetes - Symptoms and Causes, n.d.). Your blood sugar rises anytime you eat or drink anything other than water. Insulin is the  hormone responsible for allowing sugar to leave the blood and enter the cells. In a healthy non diabetic adult, eating food will show an increase in blood sugar first and then an increase in insulin. The blood sugar will then stabilize as sugar enters the body's cells. To manage diabetes type 2 many professionals recommend lifestyle changes along with medication based on the specific case. In general it is important to add more physical activity or exercise into your lifestyle as well as a prescribed medication routine and dietary changes.
