Decreasing Risk of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer can be caused by many different factors. One factor that we can control is prolonged exposure to the sun and damaging sun burns. Controlling these can significantly decrease the likelyhood of skin cancer occurence. "To lower your risk of getting skin cancer, you can protect your skin from UV rays from the sun, and avoid artificial sources of UV exposure like tanning beds and sunlamps."(Reducing Risk for Skin Cancer, 2024). If you have to be in the sun for an extended period, the CDC recommends using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. After receiving a sunburn be sure to watch your skin for newly formed spots on the skin. If you notice a new spot on your skin at anytime it is important you speak to a Primary care doctor and perhaps a Dermatologist if needed.
